Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (GE PON) devices deliver high-speed
voice, data and video services to residential and business subscribers. They present
a high-speed, Fiber-To-The-Home/Building (FTTH/FTTB) and extremely cost-
effective alternative to conventional access equipment, reducing points of failure and
simplifying network architecture.
D-Link’s PON consists of central office nodes, called an optical line terminal (OLT),
user nodes, called optical network units (ONU). Between them are the fibers and
splitters. The ONU terminate the PON and provide Ethernet interfaces to the end-
users. The OLT provide the interface between the PON and the backbone network.
They complete the end-to-end last mile with up to 1Gbps of bandwidth to residential
and business customers.
D-Link’s PON switches provide Point to Multi-Point connection from the Central
Office’s (CO) Optical Line Terminal (OLT) with single strand fibers going out to
passive optical splitters where signal are multiplied to different lines. Combining
the economic benefits of Gigabit Ethernet Optical Network (GE PON) with built-in
switching functionalities, these devices provide the platform for bandwidth-intensive,
high margin applications including Internet TV, HDTV, voice and gaming
The GE-PON service delivers up to 1Gbps speed over optical fiber wiring. The OLT
convert GE-PON different interfaces to trunk interfaces. Each OLT can provide multiple
10/100/1000BASE-T/SFP combo interfaces as trunk interfaces, and supports L2
switch function. Each GE-PON interface can accommodates up to 32 ONU through
the optical splitter.
